Year 3 students from Class D of the Business Ethics course at the Faculty of Business, City University of Macau, visited Melco Resorts & Entertainment Limited's City of Dreams on 18 March to experience the hotel industry's green operations in practice. During the tour, the students visited the Nordaq water filling plant, Winnow AI food waste scanner, food compost machine, and recycling area. They also toured hotel guest rooms to observe measures for reducing plastic use and waste management, as well as the solar power installation on the property rooftop. The students not only listened attentively to the explanations but also actively asked questions, engaging in in-depth discussions with the guides on topics such as how the Winnow AI food waste scanner works, the efficiency of the food compost machine, how the hotel encourages staff participation in environmental protection, and how to balance financial performance with sustainable investments. The visit concluded with a comprehensive introduction and Q&A session in the training room, where students actively shared their insights and discussed business ethics and corporate environmental responsibility.
Similarly, to deepen their learning in the Business Ethics course, Year 3 students from Class A visited SJM Resorts, S.A.'s Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau on 30 March. The programme began with an introduction to the resort, followed by a presentation on sustainable development. Through slides, students learned about the challenges faced by the hotel industry, including high energy consumption and carbon emissions, waste management issues, as well as opportunities in energy-saving technologies, green buildings, and community collaboration. The session detailed the innovative cooling tower wind energy recovery power generation system, waste treatment facilities, plastic reduction measures, and water conservation practices. It also highlighted carbon-neutral events, sustainable event management system certification, and various environmental awards. Afterwards, the students toured the resort’s green facilities, gaining first-hand understanding of the unique “cooling tower wind energy recovery power generation system.” They also visited three distinctive hotels of the integrated resort to observe its practical efforts in energy recycling, waste reduction, and resource management.
These two visits enabled students to move from theory to practice, allowing them to personally experience how the hotel industry leverages technology and employee participation to promote waste reduction, energy conservation, and resource circulation. The activities not only deepened students’ understanding of sustainable development in the hospitality sector but also inspired the younger generation to pay greater attention to environmental issues and contribute to the future of green tourism in Macau.
