Rector Jun Liu led a delegation from City University of Macau on a visit to the University of Évora, a partner institution in Portugal, and was warmly received by Rector Hermínia Vasconcelos Vila. During the visit, the two sides engaged in an exchange session to discuss future collaboration opportunities, particularly in the development of the China-Portugal Joint Laboratory of Cultural Heritage Conservation Science supported by the Belt and Road Initiative. On behalf of their respective universities, Rector Liu and Rector Vilar signed a renewed partnership agreement and a cooperation agreement on student exchange, aiming to promote research cooperation and student development between the two universities. The meeting was also attended by Professor Paulo Quaresma, Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation, and Internationalization at the University of Évora.
Rector Hermínia Vasconcelos Vilar warmly welcomed Rector Jun Liu and his delegation from City University of Macau, and provided an overview of the University of Évora’s discipline development in fields such as healthcare, sports and rehabilitation, health and aging society, cultural heritage and tourism management, and data analysis and business management. Rector Liu introduced CityU’s disciplinary development, highlighting industry-academia collaboration projects with partnering institutions such as Authenmole Macau and Serensia Woods Hotel in the traditional Chinese medicine and healthcare sectors. Both parties agreed that the two universities share common objectives in disciplinary construction and have a solid foundation for collaboration. They will continue to promote communication and collaborative mechanisms, and develop long-term collaborative mechanisms in areas such as faculty-student exchanges, disciplinary construction, and scientific research cooperation.
Rector Jun Liu and his delegation were invited to visit the HERCULES Laboratory, one of the leading and technologically advanced laboratories in Europe specializing in cultural heritage conservation. Laboratory Director António Candeias provided an overview to the state-of-the-art experimental equipment and analytical instruments. He also shared their innovative research ideas, such as using material element analysis to interpret changes in human society and cultural industries. Rector Jun Liu highly recognized the mission, facilities, and development strategies of the HERCULES Laboratory, and expressed his hope for further collaboration and achievements between the two universities in the field of cultural heritage conservation in the future.
As a key partner of the China-Portugal Joint Laboratory of Cultural Heritage Conservation Science supported by the Belt and Road Initiative, the City University of Macau delegation visited the laboratory and research achievements of the University of Évora. In the subsequent exchange session, representatives from City University of Macau, the University of Évora, and the Portugal Office of Science and Technology of Soochow University, including Director Wu Jie, had in-depth discussions on the future development of the joint laboratory. The three parties reached a consensus on further facilitating collaboration mechanisms. The participants agreed that CityU’s collaboration with top European laboratories, as well as with Soochow University, would better leverage Macao’s role as the “World Centre of Tourism and Leisure” and an exchange platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.
Other members of the University of Évora who participated in the meeting included Director José Manuel Madeira Belbute of the School of Social Sciences, Director Maria Clara Canotilho Grácio of the School of Sciences and Technology, Director Armando Manuel Mendonça Raimundo of the School of Health and Human Development, Director Rui Paulo Vasco Salgado of the Institute of Research and Advanced Training, Director Rui Fragoso of the Center for Studies and Advanced Training in Management and Economics, and Director José Mirão of the Department of Geosciences. Members from City University of Macau included Dean Jin Lixian of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dean José Alves of the Faculty of Business, Executive Associate Dean Li Xi of the Faculty of International Tourism and Management, and Head Daryl Yang of the Office of Global Affairs.
