Rector Jun Liu leads delegation to University of Porto and ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon to strengthen partnerships

A delegation from City University of Macau (CityU), led by Rector Jun Liu, visited the University of Porto, the top-ranked university in Portugal, and the ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon. They received a warm welcome from Vice-Rector of the University of Porto, Joana Carvalho, and Vice-Rector of the ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon, Maria das Dores Guerreiro.


Visit to University of Porto

Rector Jun Liu and his delegation held in-depth discussions with members of the University of Porto (U.Porto) on future cooperation directions, talent development, and higher education exchanges. Sofia Gramaxo, International Relations and Cooperation Officer at the University of Porto attended the meeting.


Vice-Rector Joana Carvalho provided an overview of the University of Porto, one of Portugal's oldest and most prestigious universities. U.Porto has a high reputation in Europe and is one of Portugal's most international higher education institutions, ranking first among Portuguese universities in the QS World University Rankings 2023. The university has 17 faculties, and instructions are mainly in Portuguese and English. It has hundreds of partner institutions worldwide. Following this, Sofia Gramaxo, the representative from the International Relations Office, provided a detailed introduction to the university's curriculum, faculty, and research achievements.


Rector Jun Liu emphasized that CityU is actively pursuing international development measures in the context of the integration and development of higher education in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, with strategic measures to accelerate the process of internationalization. He expressed his hope to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the University of Porto to explore more opportunities for collaboration.


Both universities conducted in-depth discussions on potential cooperation opportunities and hope to leverage the unique geographical and cultural advantages of Macao, combined with the rapid development of the Greater Bay Area, for mutual growth. Based on the disciplinary strengths and characteristics of both universities, they plan to collaborate in fields such as healthcare, nutrition, sports health, international tourism, and business, and jointly develop programs and courses, research projects, faculty and student exchange programs, and other forms of cooperation to cultivate international talents.

Rector Jun Liu and the delegation engaged in discussions with the ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon to deepen talent development, academic exchanges, and cooperation, further consolidating the partnership and exploring new areas and ways of cooperation and exchange. Maria João Cortinhal, Dean of ISCTE Business School, Ana Mónica Fonseca, Director of Centre for International Studies, and Alejandra Ortiz, Coordinator of the International Relations Office, accompanied the delegation.


During the discussions, both parties explored the possibilities of offering dual-degree programs and global competence summer programs in the fields of business management, social sciences, and smart tourism. They expressed their hopes to further deepen friendly cooperation between the two universities and promote faculty and student exchange programs. They also provided constructive suggestions for expanding cooperation in various fields and reached a preliminary consensus.


The ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon was founded in 1972 and is a nationally recognized, EU quality-certified public research university under the direct supervision of the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education. The university has eight research centers covering fields such as economics, information and communication technologies, and sociology. ISCTE Business School is accredited by AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and AMBA (The Association of MBAs). About 20% of undergraduate and graduate students are international students from more than 80 countries and regions worldwide.


Other CityU member attending the discussions were Dean Jin Lixian of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, , Dean José Alves of the Faculty of Business, Executive Associate Dean Li Xi of the Faculty of International Tourism and Hospitality, and Head Daryl Yang of the Office of Global Affairs.
