FOB Invited to Host a Financial Management Lecture at a Secondary School

The Macau Institute of Financial Services “Global Money Week” invited the Faculty of Business to host a financial seminar at the Instituto Salesiano secondary school on 31st March. Dr. Sammy Leung, an Assistant Professor in the FOB, delivered the lecture using both academic theory and a vivid presentation to educate his audience in the concepts of financial management and saving money.

Mr. António José Félix Pontes, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Macau Institute of Financial Services, delivered a welcoming address highlighting the theme of “Learn, Save, Earn”, which aimed at encouraging students to understand appropriate concepts of money. Mr. Lao Kam Chio, Deputy Director of the Research and Statistics Department of the Monetary Authority of Macao, introduced the history, organization and related regulations of the Monetary Authority of Macao. He also briefed secondary students on the local financial system, including foreign-exchange reserves, banking and insurance.

Dr. Sammy Leung delivered a lecture bringing in current affairs, celebrity examples and social cases to emphasize the importance of saving money. He also introduced some useful saving methods to establish the concept of saving. Moreover, Dr. Leung analyzed common financial plans, including insurance, investments, purchasing property and retirement planning programmes. This broadened the discussion from saving money to personal financial management. Dr. Leung also made a comparison of bank advertisements in the 1980s and today to illustrate changes in social values. The lecture ended in great enthusiasm.
