On 20th April 2016, the Faculty of Business organized a seminar on “China's Macroeconomic Outlook 2016 and Interpretation to the 13th Five Year Plan”. Prof. Qiu Xiaohua, Director of Institute of Economic Research of City University of Macau was invited to chair a seminar in celebration of 35th Anniversary of CityU. The seminar was held at 2:30-5:00pm at HG02, Ho Yin Convention Centre.
In view of the domestic growth rate, international trade, manufacturing sector and poverty rate, Professor Qiu explicated China’s rapid development since reform and opening. He also indicated the reasons behind the slowing of China’s economic growth in recent years by resemblance a person suffering from edema. As a result of many deep-rooted problems accumulated over the years, China’s businesses were confronted with challenges such as insufficient domestic demand, rising living costs, environmental constraints, pressures from debt and insufficient labor force. Prof. Qiu also specified the present global context with uncertainties such as the existing defects in the Group of 20 major economies, the delocalization phenomenon, regional political instability and the competition among transforming countries etc. In addition, he further expressed his optimism in China’s economy from a long-term perspective but also pointed out the significant challenges facing China amongst the current global context. Moreover, Prof. Qiu analyzed the development conditions of China’s economy and the likelihood of periodic turning around and rebound and addressed the widespread concern of trends in terms of inflation, exchange rate, real estate and stock market, thus making short-term and long-term forecasts towards China's economic development. Last but not least, Prof. Qiu concluded the seminar with the 5 thematic investment opportunities in 2016 and denoted the key points in the 13th Five Year Policy.
The seminar witnessed a full house and won applause for the inspiring presentation by Professor Qiu.
