Strengthening Students’ Understanding of Employment and Entrepreneurship Trends in the Greater Bay Area

To further broaden undergraduate students’ understanding of entrepreneurship and employment trends in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), and in response to Macao’s strategic direction toward economic diversification and the cultivation of innovative talent, the Faculty of Business (FOB) invited Mr. Isaac Tong, Supervisor of the Ung Choi Kun Entrepreneurship and Career Centre (ECC), to deliver two thematic sharing sessions on 9 and 10 February. The sessions were conducted for students enrolled in the BBA courses Introduction to Business and Regional Economic Studies, and were hosted by course instructor Dr. Limeng Yu.

During the sessions, Mr. Tong provided a comprehensive overview of the ECC’s wide range of student support services, including the development of entrepreneurial thinking, the cultivation of innovative ideas, guidance from professional mentors, and analyses of previous successful entrepreneurial cases. The ECC will continue to offer incubation space applications as well as enhanced entrepreneurial support services for both students and alumni, aiming to build a solid foundation for promising student teams as they embark on their entrepreneurial journeys.

The sessions were highly interactive, with students actively raising questions and engaging in discussions on Macao’s entrepreneurial environment, policy support mechanisms, industry development trends, and potential career opportunities in the whole GBA. Through direct dialogue with Mr. Tong, students gained clearer insights into available innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, mentorship systems, and pathways for obtaining relevant university and external resources.

During group discussions, students shared their reflections and key takeaways from the activity:

“This session gave me a deeper understanding of real entrepreneurial opportunities in the GBA. I didn’t realise the university already provides so many resources. As long as we take the initiative to participate, we can begin shaping our own career paths.”

“Mr. Tong’s sharing reshaped my understanding of entrepreneurship—not merely ‘being the boss,’ but navigating uncertainty, solving problems, and creating value.”

“The essence of choosing a path is not about which option is objectively better, but whether it aligns with our short-term goals and long-term plans. I realised it’s not about forcing a choice between two directions, but about identifying the one that brings us closer to where we aspire to go.”

The Faculty of Business remains committed to cultivating future business leaders equipped with innovation, entrepreneurial capabilities, and practical management skills. FOB actively encourages students to explore entrepreneurial ecosystems at the city, regional, national, and global levels. Through this activity, students not only gained new career inspiration, but also deepened their understanding of the opportunities and challenges faced by Macao as it advances toward moderate economic diversification.

Looking ahead, FOB will continue to strengthen collaborations with on-campus and external innovation and entrepreneurship platforms, providing students with more opportunities to engage with industry practices, understand market needs, and build connections with the broader business community. These efforts aim to support young talents in their long-term career development and future contributions.
