Prof. Klaus Larres, Richard M. Krasno Distinguished Professor in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, visited City University of Macao from October 15 to 18. Prof. Larres is one of the world’s leading experts on Cold War History, and has written a massive book on British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the Cold War. He is also an expert on relations between China, Europe, and the United States, and on recent U.S. diplomacy and the politics of the administration of President Donald Trump.
On October 17th, Prof. Larres gave an evening lecture on Donald Trump and China in the General Education Department course, “The World Today,” which engrossed the students who attended. He took numerous questions at the end of the lecture, which even drew in one or two students from other classes, and an outside visitor from the Netherlands. Some of the students have continued to correspond with Prof. Larres.
On October 18th, Prof. Larres delivered a public lecture on “Donald Trump and the World,” which was attended by several dozen undergraduate and postgraduate students and academic staff, including Prof. Eva Khong, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business. His presentation drew many questions both during the talk itself and at the end, in the discussion period. Afterwards, one of the students said how much he and his classmates had enjoyed the lecture, thanked the academic staff at City University for arranging this event for their benefit.
Prof. Larres also met with the Rector of City University, Prof. Zhang Shuguang, and discussed potential future collaboration on conferences and research projects. We hope that he will return to City University in the fairly near future, to continue this association.
Prof. Larres had never visited Macao before, and greatly enjoyed the opportunity to visit some of its famous sights and sample the local cuisine.
