Lecture on “The Economic Value and Social Function of Human Capital” was given by Professor Li from Nankai University

On November 16th, Faculty of Business (FOB) successfully invited Dr. Li Jianmin, Professor from Nankai University to give a lecture on “The Economic Value and Social Function of Human Capital”. Professor Kong Fanqing, the Vice Rector of City University of Macau, Dr. Chen Weimin, Director of Institute of Population and Development of Nankai University, Dr. Wei Xiahai, Director of Economic Research Center of South China Normal University, Dr. Liu Yi, Hong Kong and Macao Research Center of Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences and Dr. Lou Siyan, Course Coordinator of Bachelor of Applied Economics Program were invited to attend the lecture. Professor Li began his lecture by introducing the foundation of human capital, then sharing his opinions on the economic value and social function brought by human capital investment.

 

Dr. Li Jianmin, Professor of The School of Economics of Nankai University had long been committed to the research on demography, population economics, labour economics and related fields and was awarded “China Population Prize-Scientific Research” in 2007.

 

During the 21st century, the current economy was more knowledge-based and emphasis on creativity. The topic indicated how the human capital investment affected individual as well as the society has been widely conversed nowadays. Professor Li illustrated the economic values of human capital investment succinctly by graphics and compared the social differences between countries caused by the level of human capital investment. In addition, the issues regarding social function of human capital were explored in terms of individual right, social structural changed and woman development in the new era.

 

The lecture was followed by Q & A session and students raised many questions.  Professor Li based upon the differentiated political background and economic structure between Mainland and China to discuss the issues raised by students. Students expressed that the lecture was beneficial and would like to attend more of such lectures.
