To further deepen the connotation of business education and enhance the academic research and practical application capabilities of faculty and students, the Faculty of Business at City University of Macau invited Dr. SINÉAD G. RUANE (https://www.ccsu.edu/person/sinead-g-ruane), Associate Professor of Management and Organization at the School of Business of Central Connecticut State University, to the Faculty on February 4. Two specialized workshops themed "How to Create Your Own Business Case Study" were conducted for students and faculty respectively. The workshop also celebrates the World Case Teaching Day at the Faculty of Business (https://www.worldcaseteachingday.org/). This event aimed to promote international academic exchange, enrich teaching methodologies and research tools, and provide a cross-cultural learning and collaboration platform for teachers and students.
The morning session focused on enhancing students' research capabilities and attracted the enthusiastic participation of numerous students. Dr. SINÉAD G. RUANE started from the essence of case studies, systematically elaborating on how to identify business scenarios with both academic value and practical relevance, and delving into the research methods and data collection skills required for constructing rigorous case arguments. Additionally, she shared the diverse applications of case studies in course learning, teamwork, and future career development, emphasizing the importance of case analysis in cultivating critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The workshop featured a dedicated group discussion session, where students actively interacted, eagerly asked questions, and engaged in in-depth exchanges around case studies from various industries. Case study method contributes significantly to the university motto - Virtue, Knowledge, Practice. Participating students generally expressed that this event not only broadened their academic horizons but also provided practical methodological support for their future engagement in business analysis and strategic planning.
The afternoon session was specifically designed for the Faculty's teaching staff, with the theme "How to Create Your Own Business Case Study for Teaching & Research" Professor José Alves, Dean of the City University of Macau Faculty of Business, along with several faculty members, attended the session and engaged in discussions with Dr. SINÉAD G. RUANE on the advantages and implementation pathways of case teaching methods in business education. The content covered how to select inspiring case topics, the structure and techniques for writing teaching cases, as well as potential publication pathways and academic collaboration opportunities after case development. Attending faculty members held thorough discussions on issues such as integrating cases with the local business environment and designing cross-cultural cases, further enriching the Faculty's diversified strategies for case teaching.
