On 21 November, the Faculty of Business of the City University of Macau hosted a thematic lecture titled “Doing Business with Brazil – from China” at the China–Portuguese-Speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Exhibition Hall. Professor Fernando R. Serra, a professor of Universidade Nove de Julho-UNINOVE, and also a visiting professor of CityU Macau, was the keynote speaker. Senior Manager Weng Hei Tang from the Macau Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), Dean of the Faculty of Business of CityU Macau, Prof. José C. Alves, along with faculty members, students, and industry representatives, attended the event.
The lecture focused on the opportunities and strategies for enterprises from Mainland China and Macau seeking to expand into the Brazilian market. Prof. Serra highlighted that bilateral trade between China and Brazil exceeded US$181.6 billion in 2023 and noted Brazil’s strong demand in sectors such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and digital commerce, which presents substantial opportunities for Chinese enterprises. He advised investors to take advantage of policy incentives, including tax reductions and financing support under Brazil’s “New Industry Brazil” initiative, as well as bilateral cooperation mechanisms that can accelerate market entry.
Prof. Serra emphasized the importance of localized collaboration for successful market penetration in Brazil—such as forming joint ventures, understanding local communication norms, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Drawing on cases such as BYD and State Grid, he underscored the significance of long-term commitment and creating local value.
Leveraging Macau’s platform advantages, the event provided a bridge between academic insight and industry practice, helping participants explore the potential of China–Brazil economic and trade cooperation. The Faculty of Business will continue to focus on international business development and introduce more signature events to support high-quality cross-border collaboration.
