On May 9th, the FOB invited Mr. Vai Meng KWAN, the President of the Red Market Fishmongers Association, and Ms. Kate Kwan, a master's degree holder in Architectural Conservation (with Distinction) at the University of Hong Kong, to deliver a brilliant lecture titled "The Renovation and Sustainability of a Heritage Building: A Case Study of Red Market" for the DBA students of Class A and B.

As one of the oldest markets in Macao with a history of nearly 90 years, the Red Market not only serves as the center of daily life for Macau residents but is also the only market building listed as a heritage site in Macao. The Red Market has undergone comprehensive renovation in recent years, and this case has drawn widespread attention in the business community, as it demonstrates how to achieve sustainable community development while protecting historic buildings.

Ms. Kate Kwan first reviewed the historical origins of the Red Market and emphasized the significance of protecting historic buildings. She explained the social and cultural impact of the Red Market community and elaborated on the sustainability of local intangible cultural heritage events such as the "Drunken Dragon Festival". She then discussed the impact of the renovation project on the local community economy. The market revamp led to a temporary drop of up to 90% in vendors' business. However, it is believed that the renovated Red Market will bring more employment opportunities and development momentum to the local area, injecting new vitality into the community.

The DBA students who attended the lecture felt that this case provided them with valuable reference. In their future work, how to unleash the economic potential of cultural heritage while preserving the distinctive features of historic buildings has become a topic worth in-depth exploration.
