Theme: Managing Ethically in Times of Disruption and Conflict

The World Business Ethics Forum (WBEF) series aims to provide an open platform for academics and practitioners from around the world to share and discuss ideas and issues related to new thinking and research findings in the broad area of business ethics.
The 9th WBEF will be held from 18-19 June 2025 at the City University of Macau. The theme for the 2025 forum is “Managing Ethically in Times of Disruption and Conflict”. We invite the submission of research papers that advance our understanding of this broad theme for presentation at this Forum. Conceptual, empirical, and practitioner-oriented approaches are all welcome. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to the following:
Managing ethically under post-Covid-19, and other disruptive contexts
ESG, sustainability, CSV, CSR, and circular economy, Triple-bottom line (TBL)
Values-based approaches to corporate management (e.g., the Junzi corporation, trusteeship)
Ethical leadership, ethical reasoning and ethical decision making
Institutional safeguards (e.g., whistle-blower protection, anti-money laundering, and anticorruption)
Contemporary ethical challenges in marketing (e.g., KOL influence, green consumerism versus “greenwashing”, integrity in consumer analytics, consumer protection, and social marketing)
Contemporary ethical challenges in accounting (e.g., carbon accounting, green governance, natural capital asset valuation, earnings management, and transparency)
Contemporary ethical challenges and opportunities in economics and finance (e.g., fair competition, fairtrade, ethical investments, green bonds, social impact investment, and digital currency)
Contemporary ethical challenges in HRM [e.g., green HRM, diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI), meaningful careers, quality of working life, assuring human rights for all employees]

![]() | Prof. Simon S.M. HO is President of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong since 2014. He is a certified public accountant in the UK, Australia and Canada. Previously, he was Vice Rector (Academic Affairs) of the University of Macau, Dean of the School of Business of the Hong Kong Baptist University, and Director of the School of Accountancy of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Currently he is Chairman of the Citizen Advisory Committee on Community Relations and Member of the Advisory Committee on Corruption, Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) of Hong Kong. In recognition of his contribution to business ethics and stakeholder-based corporate governance, he was the first Chinese awarded the Faculty Pioneer Award (described as Oscar of the business school world by the Financial Times) by the Aspen Institute, USA. He was elected as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics by Ethisphere, one of the world's most recognized bodies in business ethics and anticorruption. Professor Jose C. ALVES | |
![]() | Prof. José C. Alves is the Dean and Professor at the Faculty of Business, City University of Macau, since 2018. He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and an M.Sc. in Management from the Catholic University of Portugal & Inter-University Institute of Macau. He has authored several books and numerous journal articles, focusing on entrepreneurship, international business, and innovation ecosystems. He has delivered keynote talks on topics such as China-Brazil relations and cross-border entrepreneurship and has supervised many MBA and DBA dissertations. His professional service includes roles as a reviewer for academic journals and membership in various academic organizations. He has also been involved in several commissioned and sponsored research projects. Dr. Alves has industry experience as an assistant engineer, surveyor, loss adjuster, and civil engineer in Portugal. |
Professor Shoujin ZHOU | |
![]() | Shoujin Zhou, Prof. and Dr., is the Office and Research Director of Rothlin International Management Consulting in Beijing, China. He obtained his master's degree in Chinese linguistics (Philology) in 1993 from Nanjing University, China, and obtained his Ph.D. in Chinese linguistics (Philology) in 2001 from Peking University, China. He has taught Chinese language and culture (classical and modern), translation and teacher training courses at Peking University, Jiangsu Ocean University, as well as Oxford University, University of London (SOAS), Georgia Institute of Technology (USA), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), University of Granada (Spain) for nearly 40 years. He has published three books and over thirty articles in areas of philology and classical Chinese philosophy, translation and applied linguistics. He was also the first Chinese Director of the Confucius’ Institute at London, UK. |

![]() | Dr. Juelin Yin is a professor of management at the School of Business at Sun Yat-sen University, China. Before she joined Sun Yat-sen University, she worked as an assistant professor in the University of International Business and Economics and an associate professor in Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. Her research interests include corporate social responsibility, cross-sector social partnership, and social entrepreneurship and social innovation. She holds a PhD from Nankai University, did her postdoctoral research in Harvard Business School, was a visiting research fellow in the Ivey Business School of Western University, an honorary professor at the University of Liverpool, UK and a visiting professor of management at the University of Bath, UK. She is also a fellow of Higher Education Academy (HEA) in the UK. Dr Yin has published over 40 articles in journals such as Journal of World Business and Journal of Business Ethics. She currently serves as an associate editor of the Business Ethics, the Environment & Responsibility and is an editorial member of Business and Society, Management and Organization Review and Quarterly Journal of Management. She has published four teaching cases on CSR in China in the Harvard Business Publishing database and won several case writing awards. |
Prof. Ran ZHANG | |
![]() | Prof. Ran Zhang, Director of the Department of Public Administration at the School of Public Management, East China Normal University (ECNU), excells in the research areas encompassing organizational behavior and human resource management, behavioral public administration, and social governance & ESG. He also serves as the director of the ECNU Research Center for Nonprofit and Social Governance Innovation, the executive editor of the Behavioral Public Management and Policy Journal,and concurrently holds social positions such as the Chair for the Community Governance and ESG Committee within the Commerce Economy Association of China.Over the past decade, Prof.Zhang has published nearly 40 papers in CSSCI and SSCI journals, authored seven monographs, and led almost 10 provincial-level or above research projects funded by the National Social Science Fund and the Ministry of Education's Humanities and Social Sciences Fund. |

![]() | Dr. Serge Stinckwich is a computer scientist and the Head of Research at the United Nations University Institute in Macao, a UN research think tank using a human-centred lens to look at how we can amplify the positive contributions of digital technologies for sustainable development and mitigate their risks. Before joining UNU, Serge was an Associate Professor at the University of Caen Normandie in France and a researcher in the UMMISCO international joint research unit between the French Research Institute on Sustainable Development (IRD), Sorbonne University and 5 universities located in Cameroon, Morocco, Senegal and Vietnam. He has more than 16 years of experiences working on sustainable development and digital technologies in South-East Asia, Central Africa and China. His main research interests are in Modelling of Complex Systems, Social Simulation, and the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He has applied his work to Epidemiology, Environmental Monitoring and Disaster Management. He organised and co-organized more than 50 workshops and conferences on topics such as Software Engineering, Modelling and Simulation, Rescue Robotics, Disaster Management, and Complex Systems, and supervised more than 20 PhD/Masters students from various countries (Chile, Vietnam, Cameroon, Senegal, etc.). |
