The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit

In celebration of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, the United Nations University Institute in Macau (UNU Macau), organized the Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit on 17 May 2021. The UNU Macau invited the local government, the private sector, the academics and the NGOs to share their practical experience and professional knowledge in advancing the SDGs, to investigate the SDGs’ strategic roles in Macau and explore collaborative opportunities particularly in the areas of digital technologies for the SDGs. The Summit was organized the five Ps of the SDGs: People, Prosperity, Peace, Partnership and Planet.


The Summit was opened by the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in China, Mr. Siddharth Chatterjee, who represented a delegation of colleagues from the UN China. He said "To leave no one behind, no communities behind, no village behind, there is a need for collaboration and renewal of multilateralism. Most importantly, we must embrace science, technology, and innovation while bringing together the private sector, academia, governments, civil society, the UN families towards a single agenda, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” and emphasized the UN's commitment in supporting all stakeholders in safeguarding the progress made and efforts to achieve the SDGs.


Professor Tiffany Leung from FOB was invited to one of the panelists in Panel 3: Prosperity, including SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) to share her viewpoints of her teaching, research and supervision in relation to this theme and to engage the audience for discussion. Besides, she led a PhD student and two master students from our faculty to participate in the summit. Through this summit, the UNU Macau hopes to raise the local awareness about the SDGs and celebrate the success and learn from the challenges in implementing the SDGs in Macau.
